Q&A with Keith, 7/17/09

QUESTION

I have two
metal halide bulbs that are due for replacement. Is it better to use the same brand of bulb for both, or does that not really matter?

ANSWER
It is a matter of preference. I prefer using the same brand of bulbs over my own tank. Even if the Kelvin ratings are identical, every manufacturer's bulbs will produce slightly different colors.

If you were to run a 20K Blue Life bulb on one side and another brand on the other, for example, one may appear more blue while the other shines a whiter light.

You might actually prefer this look. Many do. I just prefer a more uniform appearance. There would be no harm in running two different brands of light bulbs over your aquarium.
