Kent Marine ProScraper II Algae Scraper Demo

Every aquarium hobbyist knows the importance of regular tank maintenance. Unfortunately, for those of us with deeper tanks, it can be difficult to clean those hard-to-reach places. That's where Kent Marine's new Pro-Scraper II and Extension tool come in.

The 6-Piece Kent Marine Pro-Scraper II kit includes everything you'll need to clean the cumbersome nooks and crannies in your aquarium. A comfy non-slip rubber grip fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. Extendable, corrosion-resistant fiberglass handles are built for a lifetime of cleaning and provide the proper leverage for scraping deep-down in your tank. To lock the handles in place, just twist the red connector to the right.

The Pro-Scraper II includes three glass and acrylic-safe replacable blades, each designed for specific cleaning jobs. A fabric covered blade is used for fine cleaning and swabbing to get the inside glass as clean as the outside. The plastic blade is ideal for gently scraping algae from acrylic and glass tanks alike. The rust-resistant stainless-steel blade is recommended for removing coralline algae and calcified deposits from glass aquariums.

Blades slide into the head and snap securely into place. To remove the head, press the button and pull it out. Once you've got your desired scraper blade locked into the head, you can plug the head into the handle. Squeeze the sides of the clip and insert it into the slot. It will making a snapping noise when it attaches. Now you're ready to clean your aquarium.

The Pro-Scraper II also includes a short handle for cleaning stubborn spots or tight areas. We find it useful for cleaning salt screep from the water line.

The JBJ Pro-Scaper II is currently available in 5 sizes, from a 5 1/2" short handle to a Goliath 24" that extends to a full 36". The model used in our demonstration was the 16" to 24" variation, perfect for our 19" deep tank.

Flexible gooseneck. The length of the gooseneck is perfect for aquariums up to 18 inches wide (front to back). On my 24 inch wide aquarium, if it were mounted on the back, the fixture would need to be pushed closer to the water surface extending and angling slightly for adequate coverage towards the front of the aquarium.

Final Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised by the new dimmable light fixture from JBJ. I loved how I was able to manually dim the whites and blues seperately and get the color spectrum I wanted for my aquarium. Plus the optional 0-10v for aquarium controller functionality is definitely an added bonus. The gooseneck mount provides plenty of flexibility while at the same time feeling very solid and secured when attached to the aquarium.

The pictures above were taken with a camera phone and they do not accurately display the colors that were seen in person. The LEDs provided a mesmerizing shimmer that added a whole new experience to the aquarium coming from T5 fluorescent lighting. The coverage that this one unit provided on a 36x24x20 aquarium was fantastic. I do not have a PAR meter, but I would feel comfortable keeping SPS corals in the center area of the fixture.

JBJ has created a great product that looks as good as it functions, I would recommend it!

Fragging Mushrooms!

I've been trying to fill up real estate towards the sides and bottom of my reef, so I decided to frag some of my Red Mushrooms. I had about six heads on a single frag plug, which was making it hard to put in a lot of places in the tank, so I had no problem removing these. Not only will they attach to smaller pieces of rock rubble, but by cutting them, I will also have multiple new frags. I could potentially turn my six mushrooms into 24 mushrooms (best case scenario).

First, get your Coral Propagation Tools. For cutting mushrooms, you will really only need a scalpel, but a razor blade will work well, too. Some tweezers or tongs may also be helpful. Here's a full list of items I used today:

Boston Aqua Farms Soft Coral Scalpel.
Dissekt-Rite Specimen Forceps, 10 inch (optional, but helpful for moving small pieces).
Lee`s Aquarium Specimen Container Small or other container for holding water and coral. Tupperware or other miscellaneous containers will work.
Plastic container to put frags in. Nothing special: I used a cheese container (use what's available).
Netting or bridal veil. I used some netting that came with some base rock I just bought.
Rubber bands.
Crushed coral or coral rubble (for the coral to attach to). I smashed a small piece of dry base rock.
Safety gear: Eye protection, latex gloves, and a face mask. Remember, when fragging soft coral there are liquids that can (and will) be squirted, splashed, etc. Some soft corals can contain toxins, so it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Now to the propagation. Before I got started, I smashed a piece of dry base rock into rubble pieces. If you don't feel like smashing good rock, you can also use crushed coral media. Next, I got all of my propagation tools and supplies together. I removed the frag plug with my parent corals from the main tank and put them into a specimen container. I decided to work in my kitchen, as there is more lighting, a sink, and sturdy surfaces to work on (the floor next to my tank wouldn't due today).

I put on the PPE (personal protective equipment), and I was now ready to work. Using the scalpel, I cut the mushrooms off the plug. Then I cut the disks (mushrooms) into quarters (four pieces) with clean, smooth cuts. When cutting mushrooms, you want to get a little bit of the mouth for each piece. I did this to all of the mushrooms on the frag. After cutting each mushroom, I put the pieces into the plastic container (in my case, a cheese container) with the rubble rock. I covered the container with the netting, and secured it with two rubber bands. I carefully submerged the whole container into my aquarium, taking caution not to drop it in so quickly that the new pieces would float out. I don't have a frag tank set up, so they're in my display aquarium. Now it's time to play the waiting game...

The pieces will eventually attach to the rubble pieces, forming many new mushrooms. Once they have attached, I can glue the small rocks to frag plugs to trade with friends, or glue the rubble to live rock to take up some of that vacant real estate.

Unboxing: NextReef MR1 Media Reactor

Media reactors are increasingly making their way onto the equipment roster of many aquariums and into many homes. Today, the NextReef MR1 Media Reactor made it into my home. I love getting to test equipment on my tank. It's a tough job, but someones got to do it... Now on to the unboxing!

Upon initial inspection of the reactor, I was first taken back by the physical dimensions of the reactor and its generous aquarium size rating! The MR1 is rated for use on saltwater aquariums up to 250 gallons saltwater, and up to 500 gallons for freshwater tanks!

Next, I noticed the quality of design and solid construction. These reactors are solid, designed to last, and hand constructed in the U.S.A. The pieces and joints are channel-cut for maximum strength and strong bonding. This allows the pieces to sit tightly together before they are bonded, preventing leaks from the body. Holding the reactor, you can tell it's made with heavy gauge domestic acrylic, built to last heavy use.

The lid features a thumbscrew design with six thumb screws. This design not only provides a tight, secure seal it also allows for easy access when it's time to change the media. The acrylic lid is tapped and threaded to connect to two 90 degree 1/2" elbows. These elbows thread in securely, and to prevent a leak, Teflon tape is included for the threads. Hose barbs are also included to attach your flexible vinyl tubing to the elbows securely, so you won't have to worry about leaks.

The NextReef MR1 can be placed in your sump or next to your aquarium or sump. You can also use the included removable MR1 Hang-On Adapter to hang the reactor from the back (or side) of your aquarium or sump.

The MR1 is easy to assemble.

First, unpack all the pieces to ensure the package is complete.
Second fill the reactor with your media of choice. (You may need to rinse media first; follow the directions included with whatever media you choose to use.) Ensure that your media is "sandwiched" between the two sponges.
Assemble the lid. Put a piece of the included Teflon tape on the threads of the 90 degree elbows and tighten. I would recommend installing the center elbow first as it's easier to spin it around to install it... to each their own.
Attach the lid. If you hanging this from your aquarium or sump, you will want to attach the removable MR1 Hang-On Adapter at this time. Evenly hand tighten the thumbscrews. Ensure a tight seal.
Connect your vinyl tubing to reactor and pump. Use the included plastic hose clamps to ensure a tight fit.

That's about it. The MR1 is easy to assemble and has a solid quality design. The NextReef MR1 Media Reactor is perfect perfect for phosphate control, de-nitrification or fluidized sand filtration and, as an added bonus, is ozone safe! AquaMaxx HOB-1 Protein Skimmer: How to Get Rid of Microbubbles

Microbubbles often go hand-in-hand with protein skimmers when they are first added to saltwater aquariums, especially hang on back style skimmers.

Microbubbles usually stop forming after running a new protein skimmer for 1-3 weeks. This is generally referred to as a protein skimmer’s “break-in” period where organic slime is built up inside the skimmer body. Normally the break-in period is 1-3 weeks, although in some instances it may take 4-8 weeks.

Before installing a new protein skimmer, rinse it thoroughly inside and out with lukewarm water to remove any dust or residue left from manufacturing. If you’re using a hang on or external skimmer, you only need to rinse the parts that will have water in them.

If you’ve had your new protein skimmer running for 1-3 weeks and it is still producing a lot of microbubbles, here are some tips that should help you eliminate them from forming:

While tee fittings work well for many aquarium hobbyists, others have noted they sometimes increase the amount of bubbles being released into the tank. Tee fittings allow you to fully submerge the return line without worrying about a siphoning effect of the water inside the skimmer. For people with limited space in the back of their tank—like nano cubes with built-in filtration—this comes in quite handy. But if you aren't limited on space and can angle your return line, you might try replacing the tee fitting with an elbow fitting (this was actually the original design, the tee was added later on). For some hobbyists, using an elbow helps reduce microbubbles. A tee fitting will sometimes pull air in with the water exiting the skimmer causing extra bubbles to be mixed in. Try swapping out the tee fitting with an elbow fitting and angle the return so it is not submerged and that may do the trick.
Some aquarium additives and supplements can create a “soapy” effect that causes protein skimmer bubbles not to pop as quickly as they should. Common two-part calcium/alkalinity supplements rarely have any effect, although other supplements can. If possible, limit dosing specific additives/supplements for a few days to see if that has any effect on the amount of bubbles being released into your aquarium.

Water treatments and conditioners can also create the soapy bubble effect, as well as two-part epoxy, red slime (cyanobacteria) remover and some medication formulas. For best results, always use RO or RO/DI water to mix saltwater and top off your aquarium. If you’ve recently used two-part epoxy to attach coral to rock or treated your tank for red slime, we recommend performing several water changes to reduce the presence of these products in your tank water.
As a last resort, try placing an air control valve on the air intake to reduce the amount of bubbles being pulled into your protein skimmer. While not an ideal solution, an air control valve will allow you to scale back the amount of bubbles that enter the skimmer. You may find this reduces the number of bubbles that flow back into your aquarium. You can usually find air control valves for sale at your local pet store for only a couple of dollars.

Product Setup: Digital Aquatics Double Float Switch & Neptune Apex Breakout Box

I finally decided to hook up my Apex Breakout Box with some float switches to automate my auto top off with my Apex Aquacontroller system. I purchased the following items from Marine Depot:

The installation was simple and very straight forward. Connect the float switches to the mounts and wire them to the Breakout Box. For hobbyists using the Reefkeeper system, all you need to do is plug the molex included with the float switch kit into the SL1 module.

Once everything was wired, the setup on the Apex controller was rather simple as the breakout box is not a Aquabus module, so there is no setup or configurations to worry about. All I needed to do was add a simple IF statement to the outlet programming to switch on the water pump when the float is triggered.

The main advantage of using float switches on your aquarium controllers versus standalone auto top off systems is the flexibility of setting up multiple backup float switches, email alerts, and alarms. I plan on buying a third float switch so it can send email alerts and shut off the water pump if the primary float gets stuck in the ON position.

Digital Aquatics Double Float Switch includes two acrylic adjustable mounts and two float switches.

The float switches are GE-DING brand. I've only used Madison M8000 float switches in the past which are bigger floats, but the overall quality of this brand looks and feels pretty solid.

Magnetic sensor in the floats. I'm mounting one of the float switches upside down so I removed the plastic clip that secures the float and flipped it around. This allows me to trigger the same OPEN and CLOSE position.

What I really like about the Digital Aquatics acrylic mount is that there are two holes already drilled for the float switches. The float switch on the left will always be submerged underwater so it will act as a backup switch. My return pump will never run dry or shoot microbubbles into the display tank again should the primary switch ever get stuck (It's happened twice with my old ATO). The left switch will only be triggered if the primary switch on the right gets stuck in the OFF position.

The right float switch was flipped upside down and I reversed the float sensor. This will be my primary sensor for the water height in the sump.

I noticed that the acrylic mount slants if both thumb screws were installed in the frontal position of the mount. I moved the top thumb screw to the back of the acrylic mount to keep the float switches and mount sitting straight.

I'm using the Digital Aquatics Dual Float Switches on my Neptune Systems Apex controller. I cut the molex connectors off and wired them into the Breakout Box. Each float switch has two wires, so one wire connects to L1 and the other connects to Ground (GND). The second float switch connects to port L2 and the second wire also connects to Ground (GND).

Basic IF statements for the switches. Defer merely waits 10 seconds before turning on the water pump. This helps when the water sloshes around preventing the water pump to turn on and off when the float switch bobbles.

Quick Tips: Clogging calcium reactor or inconsistent drip rate? Try two Flow Control Pinch Valves!

Is your calcium reactor, DIY dosing pump, or drip system clogging frequently or dripping at an inconsistent rate? I recommend upgrading with two Flow Control Pinch Valves (Item Code: FT0002).

One pinch valve is good, Two pinch valves are better! With micro-ball valves or just one pinch valve, you are choking the output line too much allowing sediment to build eventually clogging the effluent line.

Two pinch valves solves this issue by reducing the flow rate at two points and allowing the effluent to flow freely through larger choke points.

Add one Flow Control Pinch Valve at the output of the reactor or pump. Dial this valve down to reduce the output tubing to a trickle flow.

Add a second Flow Control Pinch Valve at the end of the output tubing and adjust to the desired drip rate.

Product Review: Hydor Koralia Smartwave Pump Controller

In nature, water flow from river and ocean current is vital to the life cycle and health of aquatic creatures. These currents promote gas exchange and oxygenation and assist in the transporting of food, nutrients, and waste in the water column. Hydor's Smartwave helps recreate this natural flow and vital process in our aquariums, promoting health and assisting in maintaining uniform temperature.

The new Hydor Koralia Smartwave Pump Controller (item #HD00924) is the answer to hobbyists who use non-controllable Hydor Korallia pumps and have been wanting alternating flow (we'll call this "wave making"). Until recently, Koralia users have had to rely on third party wavemakers with the hopes that their pumps would be compatible. Hobbyists and websites gave mixed reviews as to what wavemaker supported these powerheads; some worked, some didn't. Fret not, the Smartwave is here!

Details:

2 outlets, both for up to 100W; Unit is UL approved and water resistant.
2 selection knobs, 1 for pump program (alternate-synchronous), 1 for time interval setting (second, minutes, hours)
Feeding program. Compact, Smartwave is easy to conceal by hanging it inside the aquarium cabinet. Designed for Koralia’s, Smartwave works with most movement pumps available on the market compatible with quick ON-OFF (5 seconds= 6.3 million on/off per year).

The Smartwave is designed to run up to two Koralia pumps (both up to 100 watts), but will also work with most movement pumps available on the market compatible with quick ON-OFF. The plugs on the Smartwave are standard three-prong plugs. This allows for use with non-controllable Koralias and other powerheads.

The interface on the Smartwave is simple. No buttons or programming, just the turning of two dials will have you up and running. The first dial selects between Feeding Mode, Alternate mode, and Synchronous mode.The led lights on the interface will light up, showing the user if the wave device is on and what (or which) pump (pumps) are on.

Feeding mode: both pumps are OFF

Feeding Mode:
This is a manual feeding mode you switch to whenever you want to stop the pumps for feeding. This mode is indicating by the icon of a fish eating. The center LED will glow green, indicating the unit is on, and the two blue leds with the icons of pumps, will be off indicating the pumps are off.

Pump 1 is ON, Pump 2 is OFF

Alternate Mode:
This mode will switch between two pumps, and is indicated by the roman numeral "I" on the first dial. When two pumps are connected, it will operate one pump at a time at the set interval (set time using dial 2). The sequence would be as follows: Pump 1 - On, Pump 2 - Off. Pump 1 - Off, Pump 2 - On.

Both 1 and 2 both ON

Synchronous Mode:
This mode will turn both pumps (or just one pump) on for the set time interval, then off for the same interval. For example, if your time is set to 10 seconds, both pumps would be on for 10 seconds, then turn off for 10 seconds. This cycle would repeat.

Automatic Feeding Mode:
There is also an automatic feeding program option that you can set. You can have the pumps turn off for automatic or timed feedings either once or twice a day. Please refer to the User Guide for instructions as it involves a few specific steps, and I don't want to confuse anyone here.

I tested the Smartwave on a few pumps I had at home, and all passed with flying colors (Koralia Evolution, Koralia Nano, and Maxi-Jet 1200 Pro). Setting up the different modes was easy to do, and offered some nice options with feeding modes. The construction is solid, and there is even a plastic shield on the power ship to help prevent water from entering the unit. Overall, this is a great new product for Koralia owners and other wavemaker owners who are looking for a good quality wave controller at an affordable price.

Introducing EcoTech Marine's newest product, the Radion XR30W. I literally drooled when I first saw the Radion LED light in person. When I got the privilege to test the new Radion prototype on my aquarium, I immediately raced home and set the unit on my tank. Once the light was lit, I had the biggest grin from ear to ear and just nodded my head the entire time. I have to admit, I am very impressed with the new EcoTech Marine Radion LED.

The new Radion is designed very well and feels very solid. I just hope the placement of the center intake fan doesn't have any long term issues from splashes or moisture when placed close to the surface of the water. It uses high quality diodes that are placed in an excellent layout that allows the colors to blend very well. Even with the LED fixture held right above the water's surface, there was no disco spotlighting effect that you would sometimes see in other fixtures. The Radion LEDs are extremely bright at its highest settings and it will still provide a good light spread as you will see in the included photos below.

The capacitive touch buttons worked fine, but there is no indicator or way to tell when the unit is at its highest or lowest setting as it continues to beep every time the buttons are tapped. The cycle button cycles through 4 different modes from white to blue. Since this is a prototype model and I did not have a instruction manual, I discovered that holding the Cycle button turned the color indicator next to the buttons from blue to green, and then the buttons became unresponsive unless I unplugged the unit. It must have been some sort of locking mechanism or mode that I will have to read in the user manual when it is available.

I could not figure out how to wirelessly sync the fixture with my Vortech pumps since the instructions are not yet available. According to EcoTech Marine it will have this capability to coordinate with Vortech pumps on night modes, storm modes, and other light and water synchronizing features which are exciting features that I look forward to seeing.

The unit did get warm to the touch, but it wasn't that bad considering I was running it at its highest intensity. Noise is also non-existant as even the fan is silent. I was able to play around with the Alpha version of their software. While most of the features were unavailable, in the final release it will have a lot of advanced features such as being able to fine tune the photo-periods with sun rises and sun sets at gradual fading intensity levels.

Overall, the EcoTech Marine Radion is a fantastic LED fixture and should definitely be considered as one of the top choices when shopping for a new LED light fixture.

Product Preview: Ecoxotic RGB Panorama LED Module

Ecoxotic RGB Panorama Module with 12 LEDs, RGB Remote, RGB Control Box, and Power Supply

I recently got to test the new Ecoxotic RGB Panorama LED Module on my aquarium. Right off the bat, the module is very well constructed. It is epoxy encapsulated making the LED module water resistant. It can be easily screwed in or mounted into canopies or aquarium hoods within minutes. The unit is very plug-n-play which allowed me to setup and test the light within seconds.

One LED module provided good coverage on a 36" x 24" x 20" aquarium as it is very bright. With my six lamp ATI T5HO fixture turned on, the colors from the LED module were very subtle and washed out by the bright T5 lighting. Depending on the placement of the module and setting, certain areas in the aquarium were highlighted where the T5 lighting couldn't reach adding some depth and special effects.

Once I turned off my T5HO fixture, the intensity of the different colors just popped in the tank. It was difficult for my camera to capture the true colors that the LED module produced, but it looks so much better in person.

The included remote can toggle through 16 different colors, and the intensity can be dimmed or brightened. There are four different settings of Flash, Strobe, Fade, and Smooth other than the fixed on mode. Flash and Strobe settings scared my fish too much so I only briefly used those settings. Fade and Smooth slowly transitioned through different colors which added a nice ambience and uniqueness to the aquarium.

According to Ecoxotic, the LED module will provide adequate lighting for coral growth in shallow aquariums less than 18 inches deep, while enhancing coloration of corals and fish in a variety of tank sizes. I have to admit I was impressed with the unit. The RGB LED Module did make the fluorescence in my livestock glow, and made the overall viewing experience of my aquarium that much more enjoyable.

Aquascape with Base Rock

After moving to a larger tank, I knew I was missing quite a bit of live rock. The live rock I had in my old 18 gallon reef tank plus any rock I had in buckets was not enough to fill my new 60 gallon aquarium. I stacked the rock the best I could and created a nice shaped rock pile, but it wasn’t very tall. The top 2/3’s of the aquarium were empty and looked rather bare.

I knew I needed more rock, but there were two things stopping me from buying the live rock. First, the price of live rock can take its toll on my reef budget. Second, I was a little weary of introducing any unwanted hitchhikers. The solution to this problem was base rock: Caribsea South Seas Base Rock to be exact!

Base rock is affordable compared to a lot of the live rock I have seen at local shops. Base rock is dead, so there are no unwanted hitchhikers. There’s no chance of bristle worms, Aiptasia Anemones, or other surprises.

Upon opening the box, I was impressed at the clean rock. It didn’t have any dead organic matter stuck to it, and it didn’t have a funny smell that some base rock may have. CaribSea’s base rock is terrestrially mined from ancient reef rock; it’s not just dried up live rock. The rock is solid and clean. It’s was very porous and with the exception of the color, blends in with my live rock. Given time, the rock will build up enough bacteria to become alive, and Coralline algae will cover the rock to leave it looking like the other rock.

The base rock didn’t require any “cooking” or “curing” to ensure it was ready for the aquarium. I simply rinsed the rock in RO/DI water and allowed it to dry. Once dry, I gave it another visual inspection and began aquascaping.

I don’t like aquascaping. It’s not the work or having my hands in the tank that I dislike; I can just never get the rock stacked correctly. I gave it a go, and after about an hour, I had the rock in formations I was happy with.

The Caribsea South Seas Base Rock was a great addition to my tank. My reef work is taller and my tank feels more reef like. I have more locations to place coral and can bring them closer to the light, and my fishes have more places to hide.

Acclimating fish using the Float Method.

After fertilizing, planting and outfitting my Ecoxotic EcoPico with a teeny-tiny heater from Hydor, I decided to let the tank get established for another month before adding livestock.

What secrets lie behind the driftwood?

Experienced aquarists often emphasize the importance of patience in this hobby. I am by no means an expert—I leave that to our support staff—but it felt right to take things slow in the beginning. I'd never cared for aquatic plants before, so I wanted to keep a close eye on my underwater garden for a few weeks. If I couldn't keep the plants alive, I rationalized I had no business adding animals to the tank.

And, as mentioned in previous posts, it's been a couple of years since I've had a tank of my own. I wanted to get back into the habit of visually inspecting the tank each day, spending a few minutes making sure the plants looked healthy and that the equipment was functioning properly.

Soon Stella got her groove back, so I began visiting some local fish stores in Orange County, CA to scope out their freshwater fish selection. I walked the aisles of a handful of stores. It was Slim Pickens. Tank and shelf space were mostly dedicated to reefkeeping. The exceptions were Tong's Tropical Fish in Fountain Valley and Reef Tropical Fish in Anaheim; both had a nice balance of fresh and saltwater aquarium species.

I was hoping to find some small red fish, like Cherry Barbs (Puntius titteya) or Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigitta). A striking red would stand out amongst the greens and browns in my tank—plus I thought my wife would dig the color choice. I envisioned a school of synchronized swimmers in red uniforms paddling peacefully in an aquatic Eden.

I considered buying fish online after striking out at a few local fish stores, but I'm glad I resisted. Buying the fish locally probably saved me fifty percent. Not only that, I paid less for six freshwater fish than I would for one of their saltwater counterparts.

I'd planned to purchase one type of fish, but ended up with two. I brought home three Cherry Barbs (2 males, 1 female) and three Silvertip Tetras (1 male, 2 females) and acclimated them using the float method. The tetras white-tipped fins and sleek, shiny bodies had won me over.

Twenty-four hours later, I felt the familiar twinge of buyer's remorse. After a long commute, I plopped down on the couch, kicked my feet up and gazed at the newly inhabited aquarium. I expected to be tucked beneath a blanket of sheer tranquility at any moment. Yep, any second now.

A frantic frenzy of fins fervently darted, chased and swam loop-the-loops while I sat back in horror. It was as if I'd dosed the tank with caffeine. I walked over to the tank and dropped in a mixture of food pellets. The tetras gobbled up every one before the barbs even noticed dinner was served. The tetras were hanging out near the surface, so I sprinkled in some sinking pellets for the barbs circling midway down the tank. That did the trick.

My feelings of buyer's remorse faded in the weeks that followed. The tetras were fast, playful and aggressive eaters. The barbs were timid, slow-moving scavengers. Their yin yang personalities reminded of Dave and Cody from Discovery Channel's Dual Survival. Initially the fish sided with their respective tribesmen. I think once they realized there would be no shortage of food in this underwater oasis, tribal tension eased and the tetras slowed down. The fish are so intermingled now I often wonder if they remember they're different species.

I've chosen to use the AquaMaxx BioMaxx Plus BioPellets on my 75 gallon coral reef tank to see if BioPellets live up to their hype. I want to be able to feed my fish and corals a lot more while still being able to keep the nutrients low in my system.

I'm going to start with 100ml of BioMaxx BioPellets and then after the initial 2 weeks, I'll add 50ml each week until around 500ml. Once I've reached 500ml, I'll test my parameters and decide whether or not I will need to use more.

I have taken my RowaPhos reactor down, but I will continue to run Carbon in my second reactor with these BioPellets. I currently have the outlet tube of the BioPellets reactor exiting at the protein skimmer pump intake for maximum efficiency.

The Hagen Fluval E-Series Aquarium Heater

My heater was giving me inconsistent performance so I had to declare my old heater dead. ("Dun, dun, dun... Another one bites the dust...") I had used the heater for roughly three years, so it served me well. Goodbye old friend, there's just no room for error here.

After a short memorial, the search for a new heater started. I wanted something reliable and virtually trouble free. A heater is something you should not take for granted. You may be tempted to cut corners here, but this is something I would strongly caution against. Heaters are important for two reasons: they heat aquarium water to the proper temperature needed and they also keep the temperature STABLE. Stability (of temperature or any parameter) is very essential to any aquarium. Don't choose a heater lightly...

Couldn't wait to get home to take pictures

I decided on The Fluval E300. I had the opportunity to view the heater a few months back, and I was really impressed. The Fluval E-Series heaters are glass heaters encased in a plastic protective guard. The Fluval E-Series employs VueTECH technology, an advanced microprocessor with dual temperature sensors which continually monitor and display the aquarium water temperature. The heater comes calibrated from the factory so no adjustment is needed, and the thermal sensing technology is as precise as an external temperature probe! The heater is also very reliable as there are no moving parts to wear out.

Out of the Box

The digital LCD display changes color to indicate current temperature conditions. The display will read green when temperature is within -2/+2 °F of the set temperature, it will display red if temperature exceeds +2 °F, and it will display blue when water temperature is lower than 2 °F. There is no guessing when changing the temperature set point. The “Easy Set Temperature Lever” allows you to easily set the temperature with a flip of the lever. Hagen took the convenience of a temperature controller, and put it directly into the heater.

Mounting the heater is simple. There are three (count them, THREE) suction cups included with the heater. They attach securely to the plastic housing of the heater, so they are nice and secure. The heater even includes a side-mounting bracket that attaches to the back of the unit and allows for install on side panels in aquariums when mounting to the back wall is not possible.

Useful Information:

Simple installation: Connect power supply, and at least one driver cable. It doesn't matter which Output port is used.

Normal usage at 100% Pulse mode

Power to VorTechs shut off. Left driver automatically switches to battery backup mode by pulsing green. Power is reduced by 50%. Right driver is not connected to the backup battery and remains off.

Final thoughts:

The EcoTech Marine Vortech Battery Backup works directly as advertised. Installation took only minutes with plugging in the power supply and cable to the VorTech EcoSmart Driver. Most of the time was spent organizing the cables. The battery backup is a small investment to protect your livestock incase of temporary outages or emergencies.

EcoTech's instruction sheet mentions "In an aquarium with no flow, fish and corals begin to die in 4 to 10 hours". Having this peace of mind, especially with all time and money invested into any aquarium, makes the battery backup worth every penny.

Ecoxotic EcoPico: Plants & Parts

A week passed after filling my Ecoxotic EcoPico with reverse osmosis water and the tank was still cloudy. I was seriously regretting not rinsing the Seachem Flourite before putting the substrate inside my little tank.

My boss hooked me up with some plants and rocks he'd received from members of SCAPE (Southern California Aquatic Plant Enthusiasts), so I headed home for an exciting evening of aquascaping.

Unfortunately, I was met with immediate difficulty.

Using a long pair of tweezers with an angled tip, I meticulously inserted plant roots into the substrate with the dexterity of a surgeon. Yet, no matter how careful I was, I couldn't help disturbing the substrate. So much so that I could no longer see what I was doing. With plenty of RO water on standby, I decided to siphon out the the murky water so I could see what I was doing. I had no idea at the time if this was a wise maneuver, but I was determined to wake up tomorrow to a beautiful planted tank.

Now with the water essentially drained, I poked a few API Root Tabs into the Flourite. Although not initially a part of the plan—a colleague had given me them after I'd already filled the tank up—I seized the opportunity to fertilize the substrate. I pushed the tablets into the soil equal distance apart, basically everywhere but underneath the driftwood.

Root Tabs are sold in blister packs, the pre-formed plastic packaging typically found in over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. The package stated the tabs contain essential nutrients for "vibrant growth," strong roots and hardy leaves and recommends adding new tablets each month for optimum growth. Sounded good to me, although I figured I'd see how the first month went before adding more.

With the substrate now supercharged, I pressed two medium size gray rocks into the dirt. The craters carved into their surfaces gave them both character. I carefully poured some smaller rocks into the shape of a trail using a paper plate folded in half. Since my fingers are fat and clumsy, I used long angled tweezers to plant my greenery. Planting without water in the tank was easy—I just stuck the greens into the substrate and gave them a little twist.

With the plants now planted, it was time to refill the tank. I set a bucket of RO water on top of my entertainment center and siphoned water down to a water bottle inside the aquarium. I really wanted to prevent another dust storm, so I'd poked a hole inside a water bottle so that the water would enter the tank very slowly. I also had a back-up plan if the water remained cloudy: Kent Marine ProClear Freshwater Clarifier.

I planned to add fish to the aquarium in a couple of weeks, so I began shopping around for a heater.

I'd been pining after the Hagen Fluval E-Series, a feature-rich line of heaters with all the bells and whistles. Of course, space inside the EcoPico is limited, not to mention the fact that the space age looking Fluval E-Series would stick out like a sore thumb in the natural aquascape I was trying to create. Small heaters, I discovered, are pretty hard to come by. I eventually settled on a 50-Watt Hydor Theo heater that ended up fitting perfectly in the tank.

Whether your tank is fresh or saltwater, there is one item that is indispensable: an algae magnet. I wanted something small I could keep inside the aquarium at all times, like I did with my saltwater tank. Based on favorable word-of-mouth here in the office, I chose the Two Little Fishies NanoMag.

NanoMag: Good things come in small packages

When I first opened the NanoMag, I'll admit, I was disappointed. The wet side is essentially a piece of foam with Velcro attached. It's only with repeat use can you appreciate how truly awesome the NanoMag is. The magnets are powerful, it easily scrubs away hard-to-reach muck plus it doesn't obstruct the view inside the tank from my favorite spot on the couch. I definitely recommend the NanoMag for small tanks. I can wedge this thing into tight spots next to the driftwood I wouldn't otherwise be able to reach. I wished I had one of these back when I had my reef going.

Front intake cover is well designed. You have the screen that blocks large debris from potentially clogging or damaging the pump, but still large enough to allow copepods and beneficial particles to flow through the pump. AquaticLife has incorporated an low water level dome that allows the pump to continue to run in very shallow applications.

AquaticLife 3700 (976 GPH) vs Mag-Drive 9.5 (950 GPH). Both pumps are very similar in design. The AquaticLife is shorter, but longer than the Mag-Drive 9.5.

Performance:

The AquaticLife 3700 is rated at 976 GPH and the Mag-Drive 9.5 at 950 GPH. I did notice the slight difference in my aquarium's water level when I switched the pumps, so I believe the ratings on both pumps are pretty accurate on the same plumbing setup. Keep in mind that I did not use a flow meter so this is based on my observation. The AquaticLife pump is a slightly stronger pump at only 82 watts versus the 93 watts from the Mag-Drive.

Design:

While the core design of the pumps are quite similar, it seems like AquaticLife took the design to the next level with their added rubber feet plate which actually helped reduce noise from vibrations, the uniquely designed intake cover, and the placement of the power cord. Again, this is without an actual decibel meter and purely from my ears. The Mag-Drive 9.5 is slightly noisier than the AquaticLife 3700 pump.

Intake Cover:

The intake screen cover on the AquaticLife is a much better design than the strainer and pre-filter sponge that is included with the Mag-Drive pumps. The intake screen is large enough to allow beneficial copepods and particles to flow through the pump. The Mag-Drive sponge filter may block copepods and particles, lose performance as it gets clogged or produce excess nitrates if not cleaned regularly. Lets not forget about the low water shallow dome that is built-in the intake cover which allows the water levels in the return chamber to be lower, great for sump water changes or when used as a reservoir pump. To be fair, a simple elbow fitting can be screwed onto the intake FPT on both pumps, but its nice that AquaticLife added that feature to their intake cover.

Power Cord:

The power cord placement at the top of the AquaticLife pump is a big plus compared to the Mag-Drive and other comparable pumps. While it may seem minor, it allows for cleaner installations, and an overall better fit. The length of the power cord on the AquaticLife pump is 6.5ft versus the 10ft power cord from the Mag-Drive. For my application, I actually like the shorter power cord better.

Final Thoughts:

Since there are very few reviews on the AquaticLife pumps, I was very hesitant on getting one. My main concern is the availability of replacement impellers. After searching online I was unable to find any stores carrying replacement impellers, however I am confident AquaticLife will be happy to assist me when the time comes as they have excellent customer support.

I would like to add that the Mag-Drive 9.5 is still a great and reliable pump. Danner pumps continue to be popular pumps that are used in various aquarium and pond applications. Replacement parts are widely available which is a huge plus. I use the Mag-Drive 3 in addition to my Mag-Drive 9.5 and I've been happy with its performance.

With that said, I really like the design and accessories that are included with the AquaticLife pumps. I also like the instructional material that AquaticLife provides with their products. They are filled with pictures and diagrams that makes it easy to understand and setup. I highly recommend AquaticLife pumps after installing one on my system. I will post updates on the pump as I continue running it on my system.

ATI T5 HO Light Fixtures & Bulbs

ATI is a German company that develops high quality aquarium equipment, from protein skimmers to lighting. Their T5 fixtures and bulbs in particular are generating positive word-of-mouth, especially among reef aquarium hobbyists.

It seems a trio of evil pigs had taken over his desktop.

Actually, today is Jason's birthday. A colleague cooked up these fun cupcakes.

The cupcakes are vanilla cake. The birds and pigs are Rice Krispies with fondant icing.
