We'll begin by selling 2 box sizes: a 35-pound box of rocks for $99.99 + shipping and a 50-pound box for $129.99 + shipping.

Marco Rocks are natural calcium carbonate and quarried near Key Largo, Florida. The company promises to be a reliable base rock source for marine and reef aquaria.

Each box is hand packed by a reef enthusiast to ensure you get a nice variety for your own tank. These reef safe rocks arrive to you pre-cycled to help speed the setup of new aquariums. They are porous, lightweight and have a large surface area.

In an average 50-pound box you'll get 3 to 4 football-sized rocks and an assortment of smaller pieces to round out the box for weight. Marco Rocks promises "no rubble" and, in fact, adds an extra 1-2 pounds for any rubble that may result through the shipping process.

QUESTION
What is the best way to get rid of hair algae in a reef tank?

ANSWER
There are many ways to battle hair algae. But it really boils down to a couple of factors:

Controlling the "fuel" that is feeding the algae (i.e. dissolved organics, like nitrates and phosphates)
Having a great clean-up crew that grazes upon the algae.

For brevity's sake I won't paste the article here but I highly recommend reading Nuisance Algae by aquarium expert Steven Pro. He details how to win the battle against hair algae in a very matter-of-fact way and there are a few pictures to help guide you. There are many other useful articles you can access for free in our Knowledgebase.

Even subtle changes to your aquarium maintenance routine can make a big difference so hopefully these articles are a springboard to getting this problem in your tank resolved. Remember, the algae will not go away overnight. Be patient, don't overfeed, beef up your clean-up crew and follow the best practices described in the aforementioned articles.

The Kones are coming! The Kones are coming!

Today we're highlighting the new Vertex Alpha Kone series skimmers. I figured what better way to celebrate Halloween weekend than to talk about the freakishly good performance of the Alpha 170 Kone. If you were at Reef-A-Palooza we had one on display at our booth.

At the heart of this Vertex skimmers performance is a Red Dragon pump which produces an amazing 1000-1200 LPH of air at a mere 18 watts and runs very quiet. For those of you not in sunny southern California (and to those who missed it), there were a lot of great new and soon-to-be-released products on display at Reef-A-Palooza this past weekend. Over the next couple of days, I'd like to go over some of the equipment we are most looking forward to.

Today, I'd like to show off some tricked-out new ballasts that will be available on our website soon. Lumatek, which is a definite favorite of MarineDepot.com's Reef Squad, recently sent us prototypes of ballasts that we will be selling soon.

So what makes them so fancy, you ask?

Each ballast can run bulbs of different wattages. The smaller one will fire a 150-250W HQI bulb while the larger ballast goes between 250W-400W with ease. This is easily done on both ballasts by the turn of a knob. Better yet, the 400W ballast has a "Super Lumens" mode that will overdrive a 400 watter.

But wait, there's more!

Deltec's Sleek New Designs

Thanks to Deltec and D-D, MarineDepot.com had several of the new Deltec protein skimmers on display at Reef-A-Palooza.

Since Deltec patented their pinwheel design several years ago, many advances have been made in protein skimmer technology. These brand new skimmers take those advancements and raise the bar even higher.

Most impressive on the new skimmer designs are the pumps. The Eheim pumps that came with the older model Deltecs were great performers for their time, but the new pumps produce an amazing 4x more liters of air per watt!

Several design updates have also made their way into the new Deltecs. Bubble chambers reduce turbulence, allowing for a more compact design while still increasing performance. On the SC models, the pump is placed underneath the skimmer. This increases performance by increasing pressure on the pump and ensuring only unskimmed water is passed through.

Deltec has long been known for their innovation and quality design. These new models look like they will live up to Deltec's reputation. Their high end attention to detail and price tag may not be for every hobbyist, but they certainly deliver high-end performance to match.

QUESTION
How much sand should I use in a 55-gallon saltwater aquarium?

ANSWER
The amount of sand to use depends on how deep you want your sandbed. The following recommendations are based on a 48"x13" footprint.

For a 1" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 35lbs of sand
For a 2" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 65-70lbs of sand
For a 3" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 95-100lbs of sand
For a 4" deep sandbed, you'll need approximately 130-135lbs of sand

OK, I lied.

There isn't an aquarium outside of our Garden Grove headquarters.

There is, however, quite a moat forming outside of our office due to the recent storms here in SoCal.

Our IT director shot this on his iPhone after braving the mighty street river. I doubt his Range Rover experienced any difficulty; I almost turned my Nissan Sentra around when I came upon the great flood.

A few employees stood outside and cheered as we motored through the urban abyss.

I think I'll take my lunch when it's low tide...

Reef-A-Palooza Update: We need your photos!

Reef-A-Palooza is just around the corner. October 24 and 25, to be exact.

We've been working very hard this year to create the best booth we've ever had. New products will be on display (some in operation), our Reef Squad experts will be fielding your questions, we'll be giving away free goodies and, perhaps best of all, we'll have computer kiosks on-site to fulfill orders.

One of the things we're trying this year is playing a slide show on a large display during the event. We're going to feature products, promos and customer aquariums.

And that, my friends, is where you come in.

We want to feature customer tanks (or "success stories," as we're calling them internally) and need your help getting photos for our slide show.
