Radion XR15w Pro: A new, smaller Radion light from EcoTech Marine for small to medium-sized aquariums

The Radion family of LED aquarium lights is growing!

You read that right: the Radion XR30 will soon be getting a little brother. EcoTech Marine has been working tirelessly to create a new, smaller Radion LED to compliment the highly successful XR30w.

Compact and powerful, the Radion XR15w Pro is specifically designed to meet the lighting requirements of the most popular marine tank sizes.

The XR15w Pro is also fully programmable with seamless EcoSmart Live integration.

The XR15w Pro features the same great spectrum, same features and same warranty as the XR30w Pro (one year for the fixture; two years for the LEDs).

With one cluster, half the wattage, a 24" coverage area and a lower price point, the XR15w Pro is the perfect solution for small to medium-sized aquariums where the full output of the XR30w platform is not necessary.

Sleek and powerful, everything that makes the Radion the best aquarium lighting solution for large tanks is now an option for smaller tanks. The XR15w Pro incorporates the same high output LEDs from Cree, SemiLED and OSRAM as the XR30w Pro, just fewer of them.

The EcoTech Marine Radion XR15w Pro is now available for at Marine Depot for $449, which includes free shipping. That is a full $200 less than the Generation 3 XR30w and $300 less than the Gen 3 XR30w Pro.

With 21 high-quality energy efficient LEDs covering the full light spectrum, the XR15w Pro is perfect if you are setting up a small cube style or shallow all-in-one tank.

The spread of the new XR15w Pro is 2' x 2'. The XR15w Pro comes with Wide Angle TIR Optics installed standard so the spread from one cluster is not much less than the spread from two clusters located inches apart on an XR30.

What is different however is the PAR at the same % output. You will achieve less PAR with an XR15w Pro versus an an XR30 model. The XR15w Pro is ideal for shallow tanks where PAR at depth is not necessary.

The maximum power of the new Radion XR15w Pro is 85 watts with a maximum PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) of 825. The chart below shows distribution 12" below the light fixture.

The fixture itself is squared-shaped, as you can see see in the images EcoTech Marine provided for this blog post. The Radion XR15w Pro is 7" x 7" with a height of only 1.5" (which is the same height of both the XR30w and XR30w Pro).

Here are some product highlights from the datasheet EcoTech Marine sent us about the Radion XR15w Pro:

PROMOTES CORAL BEAUTY AND HEALTH
  • Full spectrum + UV
  • Output optimized for coral growth
  • Preconfigured outputs matching popular Kelvin ratings
  • Perfect for recreating natural lighting conditions
FULLY PROGRAMMABLE LIGHT MODES
  • 24 hour customizable program schedule
  • Independent day and night periods with lunar calendar
  • Acclimation mode for ease of integration with your tank
  • Weather condition simulation
  • Seamlessly compatible with EcoSmart Live
  • ReefLink and VorTech integration
WIRELESSLY EQUIPPED STANDARD
  • Includes RF Module
  • Compatible with all “W” enabled EcoTech Marine products
  • Integrate lighting and flow using ReefLink and ESL
  • iOS and Android device control with ReefLink
The Radion XR15w Pro is an aquarium light a lot of hobbyists, including myself, have been hoping EcoTech Marine would develop since the original Radion debuted. Seeking wifey approval isn't necessary on every aquarium purchase, although at this price point it should be easy to get her blessing.

I can already envision her in EcoSmart Live on the iPad playing with the light settings. I was planning to upgrade my light anyway, so I'm stoked to try a Radion over my 19" x 19" nano. I have a VorTech MP10wES and battery backup that would love a new friend to play with!

One last noteworthy piece of news before you go back to salivating over the XR15w Pro photos. EcoTech Marine will begin shipping Radion Mounting System (RMS) brackets to retailers like Marine Depot in the next few months so that you can mount your Radion right on your tank rather than using an aquarium stand fixture hanger or suspend it from the ceiling.

Reefbuilders posted photos of the RMS bracket in EcoTech's booth at InterZoo 2014 and reported the price will be $99. EcoTech has indicated that more comprehensive information about the RMS will be available in July.

If you are an early adopter and want to be one of the first to get your hands on the new Radion XR15w Pro, head over to our site now to place your order! We can't wait to hear what you think about it.

EcoTech Coral Glue: this is one SUPER glue!

Cyanoacrylate… that is a term I probably use a lot more often than the average person.

You may know it better as “super glue” or even "frag glue." After experimenting with many different brands of cyanoacrylate, I have discovered not all cyanoacrylate are created equal and some are clearly better than others.
At the top of my list is Coral Glue from EcoTech Marine. I have been using Coral Glue for a few months now and have been very happy with the results.  Not only is it extra thick, it also sets quickly and holds extremely well—all properties I look for in a great glue to attach my corals.
EcoTech Marine Elements Coral Glue works great for attaching SPS corals, LPS corals, zoanthids and many others. Thanks to the extra thickness of the glue and the quick set time it can also be used to glue rock structures together.
The trick for working underwater is to put an ample amount of glue on the coral or frag disc/plug, then rotate it from side-to-side it as you press it on to the live rock. After 10 seconds or so, the glue will begin to set. You may notice strings of glue and feel it start to "grab." Once it grabs, you can then press down and hold for a few seconds while it fully sets. A toothpick works well for cleaning up excess glue.
Unless you are planning to frag a ton of corals, I recommend the smaller 30mL bottle over the larger one as the glue does have a shelf life of 1-2 months after it has been opened. At $9.99 for a 30mL bottle of cyanoacrylate (which is equal to more than 7 small tubes), EcoTech Marine Elements Coral Glue is a great value.

EcoTech Marine Generation 3 Radion LED Aquarium Light Fixtures: Everything there is to know (so far)

The Radion Generation 3 is here!

The first thing you'll notice is the sleek updated design, including illuminated tactile buttons...

... but where you will really see a difference is in the output:
  • The G3 base model now includes indigo/UV LEDs, providing more output, and a wider spectrum than its predecessor the G2.
  • The G3 Pro model further raises the bar for max PAR and spectral output by taking advantage of top bin Cree XP-G2 and Osram Oslon Square LEDs.
In addition, reef enthusiasts can further customize their G3 and G3 Pro output at any time by purchasing EcoTech's new 120 degree wide-angle TIR lenses. Best of all, both the G3 and the G3 Pro fully integrate with the EcoSmart Live platform, enabling complete control over your Radion lighting—any time, anywhere.

OVERVIEW

For 2014, EcoTech is updating its award-winning LED light fixture models. Both the base and Pro models are being revised to incorporate updates in LED technology as well as minor design changes to improve aesthetics, simplify service, and modify the on-fixture user interface.

NEW LOOK

The exterior has evolved; hard edges and contrasting materials have been replaced with a one-piece lens frame that tapers to the lenses and improves the base form factor.

The sheet top also morphs slightly to accommodate backlit tactile buttons that replace the cap sense controls on the previous models. The new buttons make operation of the fixture simpler and reduce the risk of RF interference from other equipment.

SPECIFICATIONS

Now introducing the addition of UV and Indigo LEDs to the XR30wG3. Efficiency gained from new Cree and OSRAM LEDS allows for the addition of 6 more LEDs with only a 10W net increase in power consumption.

The XR30wG3 Pro gains output from new OslonBlues and Whites. This translates into more output while maintaining the same maximum wattage of its predecessor.

THE NEW CLUSTERS

2014 brings some new offerings from the top LED manufacturers—resulting in changes to the LEDs used in the XR30wG3 and XR30wG3 Pro.

XR30wG3 LED Cluster (2 used per fixture)
XR30wG3 Pro LED Cluster (2 used per fixture)

RETROFIT KITS

As with new product versions of the past—with the generation 3 EcoTech has done its best to maintain backwards compatibility by offering retrofit and upgrade options.

Neptune Systems' Handsome New Apex Dashboard

Next up, we dropped in on Neptune Systems to find out what's new in the world of aquarium automation. Paul Jansen, Neptune Systems' Director of Operations, first took a moment to remind us what's so great about aquarium controllers in the first place. In a nutshell: they make the hobby easier for aquarium keepers so they can spend more time enjoying the fruits of their labor. The ability to control everything from a single source is one of the greatest benefits controllers offer. Not having to unplug everything just to find the cord for your powerhead alleviates a lot of headaches. Not only that, having the power to monitor and control your aquarium from anywhere in the world grants hobbyists with demanding systems the freedom to have a life outside their home.
The beautiful new Apex Dashboard was one of the hightlights in the Neptune booth this year. In fact, Neptune Systems' new controller interface, expanded product selection and overall rebranding helped the company earn Reef-A-Palooza Best in Show honors in MarineDepot.com's annual "Best of" awards. Anyhoo, back to the dashboard: many hobbyists are probably familiar with the simple drop-down controls used in the old design (which are still accessible, by the way, if that's your preferred user-interface). The new, more graphical UI is much more user-friendly. You can drag-and-drop various "tiles" on your dasboard to quickly check your temperature, pH and other key water parameters at-a-glance. Controllable features can now be adjusted using your mouse. Just slide a bar using your mouse, similar to how you might raise or lower the volume on your PC. Another feature that impressed attendees as well as our own staff was the ability to monitor your tank via web cam and have the video stream right on your dashboard. The camera Neptune Systems had running during the show was from D-Link, although we were told that any internet protocol (IP) camera will be compatible.
Paul demonstrated some of the monitoring and control capabilities available in their iPad and iPhone applications. Don't worry, Android users: Neptune has an app for you that is currently being beta tested by users so they can polish up the programming before the finished product comes out in the coming months. Allowing hobbyists to check in on their tanks from their mobile device or smartphone is a huge convenience and the ease-of-use of their apps make Neptune Systems an attractive control system to adopt if you're considering automating your own system. You needn't worry about a bunch of complex programming that may be over your head if you're not super tech-savvy. Neptune Systems' new AI has a bunch of built-in wizards to help you get things setup quickly and easily. They also ensured us that more wizards are in the works to keep up with the ever-evolving needs of hobbyists.
Neptune also showed us their exclusive wireless pump control for EcoTech VorTech powerheads, which they pointed out you can't get from any other controller company on the market today. You can switch your powerheads into pulse, lagoon or feed mode with your iPad while sitting on the couch or from your mobile device anywhere you have web access.
Neptune explained they have been hyper-focused on producing the best possible products and are now ramping things up to expand into international markets. We expect to see a lot more adoption of Neptune controllers in the latter half of this year and in 2013 based on what we've seen at the show this year: new exciting products, a revamped and polished website and an expansion in their marketing efforts. You really get the feeling the company is feeling confident and we're excited to see them grow.
One last nugget of newsworthiness: the AquaController Apex Jr. is getting some refinements as well, including color-coded cables (like PCs often have) and other improvements to make the out-of-the-box experience better and super easy for even beginning hobbyists to get up and running.

The decapsulation process involves removing the indigestible outer shell of the brine shrimp cysts so you can feed either the hatched artemia or the unhatched egg without worrying about the health of your fish. To hatch, simply rinse on a screen and add to your hatcher, aerate so the eggs are not settled on the bottom and target normal or slightly higher salinity. Hatching should occur within 24 hrs after which you can drain and rinse or enrich the newly hatched artemia. This product can also be used as a coral food when added directly to the tank and the eggs that are not captured by coral polyps will hatch out and become fish food. From $11.99
